There hasn’t quite been an Australian band like Confidence Man in a long time. The Brisbane formed quad have captured the ears of the masses with their catchy, dance driven electric beats and epic stage performances. Revealing only their stage pseudonyms – Reggie Goodchild, Clarence McGuffie, Janet Planet and Sugar Bones to protect the identity of their other projects with bands such as Moses Gun Collective and The Belligerents, the band embody the weird and wonderful to make confident music for confident people. Debuting in 2016 with catchy dance tune “Boyfriend (Repeat)” Confidence Man were quick to rise on the scene as the track gained mass popularity. Following with another huge hit “Bubblegum” shortly after the band were invited to play Splendour in the Grass 2016 driven by the popularity of their two hit singles.

It was in fact their epic performance from Splendour in the Grass 2016 which led me to this band and I was quick to jump on the bandwagon of electronic dance music mixed with funky old school disco. I was very excited to follow the band and when their debut album “Confident Music for Confident People” was released two years later I was impressed. Their unique performance style and disco sound has taken them across the world with special attention from Europe in the 2018/19 festival season. I knew that these guys would be popular for their point of difference in the industry and I couldn’t be happier for their success.

 

A winning dance routine at Sitg ’16

 

This was one of Confidence Man’s first performances in front a big crowd and this epic dance routine performed with perfect vocals and instrumentals set the tone for what the band has offered their crowds since. Their sets are one big party and to be able to consistently create that atmosphere is a massive feat. This was the performance that drew me to this band and I hope you can appreciate why.

The interview/live performance combo clip provides some insight into the weird and wonderful meaning behind Confidence Man’s lyrics in newest hit single from their debut album “Better Sit Down Boy”. Embodying the new age ideals of female empowerment the single is an ode to telling boys what to do in a cheeky manner. The performance aspect of this clip is of particular interest to me as their constructed dance routines are simple yet so effective and easily able to be copied by the audience. The band make a conscious effort to include their audience and make their performance a big party for everyone.

I love the fun and quirky side to Confidence Man and this clip taken from All Points East music festival in 2018 perfectly shows off this side. This band know when they need to be serious but are so good at enjoying themselves and brining a lighter energy to the music scene.

 

They’re headed QLD way this month
