Richard D. James, better known as Aphex Twin has graced the music industry for over two decades and has since been recognised as one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of all time. His music is edgy, raw, powerful and not to everyone’s taste however, his forward thinking and emotional work which ranges from ambient electronic music to manic head-rush acid techno has lead to multiple groundbreaking albums and EPs. Aphex Twin has been producing music since the early 90s and continues to produce and perform new music. His most recent release was single “T69 collapse” in 2018 and the music veteran most recently performed at Coachella 2019.

It’s true Aphex Twin’s music is not for the faint hearted however, If you can get past the peculiarity of this artists music you can appreciate the music for it’s complexity and beauty that it possesses. My favourites include “Windowlicker” for it’s ethereal and out of body base line , “#3” for it’s emotion and deepness of sound and “Xtal” for it’s intense base and soul jerking tune. Every now and then you come across a musician who speaks to you like no other has and Aphex Twin possess a uniqueness I have never heard before. It would be my absolute dream to witness him perform live one day.

By far one of my favourite tracks from Aphex Twin, this is the shortened version of the short film created for “Windowlicker”. The full version is riddled with some heavy profanity however, If you wanted to watch the full short film click here. Known for pushing boundaries and for that creepy/cheeky grin “Windowlicker” is reaction to the fantasy world celebrities live in more specifically an ode to fake smiling to the camera. The video makes you uncomfortable and creeped out and sticks with you for life. Some may think that’s horrible but for me I see it as genius.

I absolutely adore Aphex Twin for his creativity and for lack of a better word balls! What he’s trying to do here – make an instrument out of one large orchestra is something I;ve never seen attempted. It’s truly breathtaking how this man thinks and he proves time and time again that sound is to be experimented and played with, and music should always involve something new and never been done before.
